MLS AI bots hit 1,200 attempts a day — and many Claude shortcuts break bylaws

Original headline: “Serving clients or breaking bylaws? AI shortcuts into the MLS are all the rage” — HousingWire, Oct 13, 2026

HousingWire columnist Craig Rowe reports on October 13 that agents are using AI tools — often browser-based automation — to automate MLS workflows such as CMAs and buyer search, frequently against MLS bylaws. Solid Earth CEO Eric Steggman told HousingWire his company's security software is blocking up to 1,200 such attempts per day (under 10 six months earlier); Austin agent William Zhang said his MLS warned him after Claude accessed his MLS account through a browser, and Colorado agent Brendan Bartic promoted a Claude Chrome extension for MLS CMAs (about 55k Facebook views) while Cotality's REColorado use policy Section 4 bars robots, crawlers and similar automated access. BrightMLS launched an AI training program in September, FlexMLS (FBS) announced an MCP server this spring for its roughly 160 MLS customers, and industry sources including Lundy.ai's Justin Lundy flag credential storage and data reuse as the core risks; HousingWire said Cotality and REColorado did not respond in time for publication.

Our take (opinion & analysis, not reporting)

Before you wire Claude, ChatGPT or a Chrome extension to your MLS login, read your MLS and data-provider terms and ask compliance whether browser AI helpers are allowed — a coach video is not a green light. Prefer vendor or MLS-blessed paths such as an official MCP connector when your board offers one, and never share lockbox codes, credentials or other brokers' listing data with an unapproved bot. If your MLS still has no AI policy, ask your association what is approved rather than guessing from YouTube.
