UWM now pulls FICO and VantageScore on every file and picks the stronger score
Original headline: “UWM to use FICO, VantageScore 4.0 on every file” — HousingWire, Oct 6, 2026
United Wholesale Mortgage said it will obtain both a Classic FICO score and VantageScore 4.0 on every credit pull and automatically apply the stronger qualifying score that meets the borrower's program, aiming for lower payments, cheaper mortgage insurance and lower fees without brokers choosing a model. The change follows FHFA's multimodel push and comes as Rocket Mortgage said it will make VantageScore 4.0 its default for eligible loans in Q4 2026.
Our take (opinion & analysis, not reporting)
When a UWM-backed buyer is near a credit cutoff, ask the loan officer which score actually priced the file — the stronger model may be the one that got them approved. Note the scoring model in the buyer's CRM record when it is near a program cutoff.
